Der Aconcagua, der höchste Berg des amerikanischen Doppelkontinents, gehört trotz seiner 6958 Meter nicht zu den eindrucksvollsten Berggestalten Südamerikas. Er ist kein Vulkan, und damit fehlen ihm deren elegante Hangschwünge. Hohe Lufttrockenheit und Windwirkung verhindern die Entstehung einer Eiskappe auf dem Gipfel, doch ziehen aus fünf Karnischen kleine Hanggletscher herab. Der im argentinisch-chilenischen Grenzgebiet der Hochkordillere gelegene Berg wurde 1897 erstmalig durch den Schweizer M. Zurbriggen bestiegen. - 1975

It establishes the natural border between the eastern, low-lying areas and the Pacific coastline, which extends westwards for thousands of kilometres. The Aconcagua (approx. 7,000 metres), dear to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, is the highest peak in the Andes mountain range. It rises majestically between Argentina and Chile. It is usually covered with clouds. Its ascent has tempted many andinists - the name given to mountaineers. However, it presents serious dangers. - 1973
