Chez les anciens Péruviens, le quipu, mystérieuse cordelette à noeuds mnémonique, que nul ne sait plus déchiffrer, remplaçait l'écriture. Long de 3 mètres et de couleurs variées, celui-ci, qui provient des fouilles de Nazca, sur la côte, a six cent ans d'âge. (Musée régional de Ica.)
