The Coast Salish are justifiably famous for their carved spinning whorls, as shown by the example. The figure is surrounded by an otter on the left, a bird on the right, as well as by two bird heads positioned between the head and arms. The whorl is probably maple wood and was acquired in 1884 from the Cowichan Halkomelem on Vancouver Island. (21 cm; NMM)

The Coast Salish artist Susan A. Point created this modern round drum. It consists of a red cedar frame covered with deer skin. The thunderbird in double profile is painted in the style of a spinning whorl. This type of drum is used today in place of a drum board as accompaniment for the songs sung during a stick game (see 53). (44 cm)

In dem auf 2960 Meter Höhe gelegenen Cajamarca lockte Francisco Pizarro den Inka Atahualpa in einen Hinterhalt und nahm ihn gefangen. Noch heute wird die «Camara de rescate» gezeigt, jenes Zimmer, das Atahualpa mit Gold anfüllen ließ. Das Lösegeld rettete ihn jedoch nicht vor dem gewaltsamen Tod. Cajamarca hat bis heute weitgehend seinen kolonialen Charakter bewahrt, und mit seinen 30‘000 Einwohnern ist es ein reger Marktflecken: Eine Marktfahrerin spinnt ihre Wolle im Gehen. - 1976
