Description

Harvest in the wheat fields in the area between Quezaltenango and Chichicastenango. Tilling the soil is of sacred importance to the Indians. Crops extend wherever the earth is fertile and climatic conditions are favourable. Meanwhile, the indigenous people have always restricted themselves to minimal soil use, as the earth is meant to be conducive to nourishment, not enrichment. Intensive cultivation would be contrary to the reverence that should be shown to the earth. - 1977
