Description
The Toro Muerto petroglyphs in the Majes Valley in the Arequipa region comprise thousands of volcanic boulders bearing prehistoric rock carvings. The site is situated in the desert in the district of Uraca, in the province of Castilla, some 150 km north-west of the city of Arequipa. Over 5,000 to 6,000 engraved boulders depict zoomorphic, anthropomorphic and geometric motifs such as animals, dancers and symbols. The most densely concentrated core area, where most of the engraved boulders are found, covers approximately 5 square kilometres. Within this main area, the finds extend over a length of approximately 3.8 kilometres and a width of about 250 metres. – Peru – 1976
