At the edge of the Aïr mountains, the petroglyphs converge at the mouth of the wadis (valleys), where the savannah life prevailed the longest after the onset of desertification. They testify to the fact that giraffes and lions cavorted here with the animals of Neolithic cattle herders.

This engraving of a warrior or hunter was probably executed during the Metal Age (3000 BC), as evidenced by his spear. Height of the figure: 95 cm. The shelter of Hem itself is 4.50 meters high at its entrance and 20 meters deep. The engravings and paintings found there were executed from the entrance up to a depth of 10 meters.

Remarkable couple of giraffes with great anatomical detail, attributable to the so-called “naturalist belle époque”. The giraffe on the left is 5.80 meters tall from its hind hoof to the head, and the one on the right is 3.02 meters tall from its nostril to the tip of its tail.
