Machu Picchu

In the shadow of mount Huayna Picchu, the sacred city of Machu Picchu was built in the fifteenth century for the Inca emperor Pachacutec. In 1983 it was declared World Heritage by UNESCO and in 2007 it was chosen among the seven new wonders of the world.

Woman, lamb and child

In the region of Apurimac, wearing typical clothes and a hat from the Peruvian highlands (Altiplano), this Aymara shepherd offers her lamb a bottle after breastfeeding her own child.

Ucayali River

Born in the Andes, the Ucayali river runs across Peru for 2670 kilometres before flowing into the Amazon. Pushed to exodus by deforestation, Shipibo families still cling to their traditions: river fishing, pottery, crafts, botany and natural medicine.

Little girl with banana leaf

The region of Loreto in north-eastern Peru is one of the wettest and least populated regions in Peru. This simple banana leaf, taken by a Shipibo child to protect herself from the tropical rain, comes from the still untouched Amazon forest... but for how long?

Chichicastenango

The steps of the Santo Tomas church in Chichicastenango (Guatemala) were in actual fact those of a pre-Columbian temple. They are 18 in total, one for each month of the Mayan calendar. This Quiché woman is bringing her offering to the Christian saints, behind which lurk the main figures of Mayan mythology.

Striped trousers

In the lake Atitlan region (Guatemala), men wear their traditional striped trousers, plus belt, shirt and a Wild West hat. This girl seems to prefer Mayan motifs. Tradition and modernity living together back-to-back...
