Maximilien Bruggmann (1934-2016) was undoubtedly too discreet, too reserved to become famous. Yet he was one of the greatest desert photographers. His work is vast, his journey exceptional. He traveled multiple times across four of the five continents and reserved the fifth for the afterlife. He left us more than 150,000 slides, of which a good third have been digitized for posterity.

His photographs have been published in around sixty books. They tell the story of life, but not his life, no, the lives of others. It is to fill this gap that we undertook this biography, focusing on what was his greatest passion, the Sahara. The title "Maximilien in the Desert" is a tribute and a nod to Théodore Monod, who wrote the preface to the most important of his books and whose first Saharan narrative, "Maxence in the Desert," was published exactly a century ago.

The book is available on Amazon but only in French.
