Innumerable petroglyphs have been found on the Northwest Coast. Only in the rarest of cases is it possible to determine their age. Two killer whales are recognizable in the photograph, and the figure to the right probably represents a pregnant gray whale. These petroglyphs were found near the deserted Makah village of Ozette.
In Petroglyph Park in Nanaimo, located on Vancouver Island, the figures shown in the lower photograph are particularly interesting. The largest of them may represent Wasco, a creature which is part wolf and part killer whale.
Petroglyph from Cape Mudge, located on Quadra Island. That the face represents a sacrificed slave is one of several theories about this and similar representations. This rock is now situated in front of the Kwakiutl Museum, Quathiaski Cove, B.C.
