The natives of the Queen Charlotte Islands, on the other hand, have won their fight for survival. Daphne Yeltatzie, from the Haida community of Masset, maintains the tradition of hanging halibut fillets from a ceiling grate to dry.

Today Friendly Cove (the Yuquot Reserve) is inhabited by only a half-dozen people, Terry Williams, pictured, among them. Here she is wearing jewelry made with glass beads, a style that is actually typical of the Plains Indians.
