The Tassili n'Ajjer mountain range is known for its prehistoric rock paintings and rock engravings and other archaeological sites from the Neolithic period. A large part of the mountain range was protected by a national park in 1972, which has been recognised as a World Heritage Site and World Natural Heritage Site since 1982. It was also designated a biosphere reserve in 1986.
