Prehistoric rock art is known from various places in the form of engravings and paintings. Large engravings of wild animals date from the earliest phase, from around 8000 BC. The most important regional site for this is Enneri Gonoa. The so-called ‘Man of Gonoa’ is one of the best-known motifs of the Eastern Sahara. Polychrome paintings increasingly appear in the later phases. Initially, they mainly depict cattle, later camels and armed warriors.
