Evening caravan

Night will soon fall on the dunes of Erg Izane (Niger), but there is still a long way to the next well. Considered the «desert of deserts», the Ténéré is almost as large as France and stretches up to Chad. Annual rainfall does not exceed 12 mm!

Azalaï

In Tamasheq language, a salt caravan is called «Azalaï».The salt cakes, extracted from brackish water, are transported from east to west across nearly 700 km, from Bilma to Agadez (Niger). The journey through the Ténéré desert is usually undertaken in October and lasts a month. In the foreground, the remains of a camel.

Tan Zoumaïtak

In times of the «men with round heads», the Sahara was still green, the women free (?) and there were manifold animals. Only the Barbary sheep has survived the desertification in the mountains of Tassili n'Ajjer (Algeria).

The snake and the fly

Young Kanuri woman in the Kaouar region (Ténéré desert, Niger). She is wearing the traditional nose ring that represents a snake biting its tail. As for the fly adorning her forehead, unfortunately it belongs to a pervasive presence in these latitudes...
