The smile before

Ambon Island, part of the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, was marked by a violent communal conflict between Christians and Muslims from 1999 to 2002. If no sign of this tragedy appears on the face of these carefree boys, who have just taken a cheerful bath, it is because this photo was taken before that date.

Back from school

Also known as “the golden city”, Jaisalmer is located in the heart of the desert, on the caravan route from India to Persia. Wearing a strict uniform of a white blouse and a blue skirt, this girl comes home from school (Rajasthan, India).

Do you see anything coming?

In Jaisalmer, in the shadow of tiny windows, the arrival of caravans – synonymous with wealth and openness to the world – has been observed for centuries. Today, the closure of the Indo-Pakistan border has been very hard for the local economy and even the children suddenly wonder if happiness will one day return. (Rajasthan, India)

Rice and curry

In Sri Lanka, the traditional meal consists of nine dishes: on the left, white rice and fried rice, papadan bread, vegetable soup, cooked tuna, curry sauce, a bowl of red carrots, mixed vegetables with grated coconut, eggplants and yellow lentils.

In the Thar Desert (western India), this young nomad woman, called Barbati, is preparing the chapati, traditional Indian bread. An image that, except for some clothing details, might as well belong to everyday life in the Sahara. Similar conditions, similar traditions.
