A road near Karwar, a coastal town in the Indian state of Karnataka. The region is known for its picturesque setting at the mouth of the River Kali, but also for its agricultural traditions. Drying red chillies by the roadside is a common practice in this area to preserve the harvest. The dark asphalt of the roads absorbs the sun’s heat and acts as a natural drying tray, which speeds up the process. – 1990
