Précieuse parure de momie d'un tombeau antique de Larache, au nord du Chili, datée d'environ 1.000 av. J.-C. par le Père Le Paige. Deux colliers, l'un en rondelles de turquoises, l'autre en petits tubes de lapis-lazuli, entourent une plaque pectorale en or, une grosse turquoise et quatre clochettes d'or, entre deux «plumes» d'or ajourées. L'un des «trésors» les plus «hauts» du globe: celui découvert à 6.050 mètres d'altitude, au sommet du volcan Pili, dans les Andes du Chili. Un éventail de plumes rouges, des cordelettes tressées, une ceinture tissée, des fragments de tunique multicolore, des tupus (fibules) et un bracelet de cuivre oxydé, une idole d'argent, furent trouvés près du cratère éteint. Der gewaltige Granodiorit-Batholith der Südanden wird in der chilenischen Provinz Magallanes von der auf argentinisches Gebiet übergreifenden Cordillera del Paine (2460 m) überragt. Die hohen Felsnadeln, die Torres del Paine, bestehen aus Überresten kreidezeitlicher Deckschichten, die einst den aus der Tiefe emporgedrungenen lntrusivkörper überlagerten. Durch Kontaktmetamorphose ist das Gestein stark verhärtet und dadurch besonders widerstandsfähig gegen Abtragungsvorgänge geworden. Im Vordergrund die Laguna Amarga. Das Bild entstand im Südsommer, am 10. Januar 1976 um 11 Uhr abends.

Büsserschnee ist ein an die Hochgebirge der subtropisch-tropischen Trockenzone der Alten und Neuen Welt gebundenes Phänomen. Schneedecken, die sich in der niederschlagsreichen Jahreszeit gebildet haben, unterliegen bei sommerlich–herbstlichem Strahlungswetter selektiven Abschmelzungsvorgängen, die durch Unebenheiten auf der ursprünglichen Schneefläche gesteuert werden und dicht nebeneinanderstehende, aber doch völlig isolierte Firnzacken herausmodellieren, die einer Prozession von Gestalten im weißen Büßerhemd ähneln (penitentes). Das Bild ist in 4900 Meter Höhe am Paß von Huaitiquina aufgenommen, der von Salta (Argentinien) nach San Pedro de Atacama (Chile) führt. - 1975

Von der argentinischen Stadt Salta führt ein alter Saumweg, heute eine schlechte Autopiste, über den Pass von Huaitiquina nach San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. Früher trieb man Viehherden über diesen Pass, um die chilenische Hafenstadt Antofagasta mit argentinischem Fleisch zu versorgen. Wenn der gefürchtete Viento Blanco – der «weisse Wind» - weht, überzieht sich die in 5000 Meter gelegene Hochfläche innerhalb weniger Stunden mit einer meterhohen Schneedecke, und nicht selten kamen in solchen «Blizzards» Mensch und Tiere um. Davon zeugen die in der Sonne gebleichten Rinderskelette in dieser trostlosen Einöde mit ihren Salzseen, überragt vom hohen Kegel des Vulkans Lascar. - 1975

Zusammen mit der Braden Copper Company und der Anden Copper Mining kontrollierten diese drei nordamerikanischen Gesellschaften 95 Prozent des Kupferabbaus. Nach der Eroberung der chilenischen Gebiete durch Pedro de Valdivia um 1550 hatten sich die kriegerischen Araukaner an die Spitze aller Aufstände gegen die Fremdherrschaft gestellt, und unter ihrem Führer Lautaro marschierten die indianischen Heere nach der Befreiung der südlichen Gebiete sogar auf die Hauptstadt. Der Angriff wurde abgeschlagen, doch das araukanische Kerngebiet blieb bis gegen 1800 de facto unabhängig. - 1973

In Form und Lage erinnert dieser schönste Andenvulkan an den Fudschiyama. On 21 October 1520, Ferdinand Magellan and a fleet of four ships entered a strait separating Patagonia from Tierra del Fuego, which today bears his name. On 28 November of the same year, the Portuguese navigator's sailors reached the Pacific Ocean. The passage had taken thirty-six days. This achievement was one stage in the first voyage around the world, an adventure that was to end in death for Magellan and most of the men in his crew. Today, traversing the Strait of Magellan offers no difficulties, despite the harsh weather in these regions. A ferry connects the mainland with the large southern island. The areas on both sides of the strait belong to Chile. Tierra del Fuego owes its name to the navigator Magellan, who was astonished to notice Indian fires all along the shores. Today, instead of the Indian fires, the columns of flames from the oil drilling sites glow there. The National Road 3 leads to the northern shore of the strait and continues over there. - 1973
