Round copper disk, divided into eight sections, with geometric designs, perhaps stylized feathers. The disk may have been fastened to a piece of clothing. Diameter: 9.68 inches. Casas Grandes (Mexico), AFM. Copper items reached the Southwest through trade channels starting in the 10th century. They were exchanged for pottery and turquoise and are most commonly found in Hohokam and Anasazi sites.

Die Chilean Exploration Company, eine Tochtergesellschaft der Anaconda Copper Mining Company, betrieb seit 1905 die Kupferminen in Chuquicamata. Zusammen mit der Braden Copper Company und der Anden Copper Mining kontrollierten diese drei nordamerikanischen Gesellschaften 95 Prozent des Kupferabbaus. Da Kupfer der wichtigste Devisenbringer des Landes war, wurde die Nationalisierung der Kupferbergwerke eine der wichtigsten politischen Aufgaben. 1971 verstaatlichte Salvador Allende das Kupfer, eine Maßnahme, die auch die Militärjunta nach ihrem Putsch nicht mehr rückgängig machen konnte. - 1976

Der peruanische Ort Cerro de Pasco auf 4350 Meter ist mit seinen heute 30 000 Einwohnern seit der Kolonialzeit ein wichtiger Bergbauort. Gold, Silber, Kupfer und Zink werden zum Teil in Minen abgebaut, die 5000 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel liegen. Die Kohle kommt jedoch aus dem tiefeingekerbten Canón von Goyallarisquisga, trotzdem das höchstgelegene Kohlenbergwerk der Erde. - 1969
